Chocolate Festival returns on Feb. 2 - Hot Springs Sentinel

The Embassy Suites by Hilton Hot Springs Hotel & Spa will be filled with thousands of sweets when it hosts the 16th annual Chocolate Festival in February.

Hosted by Cooperative Christian Ministries and Clinic, the festival will be held from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Feb. 2, the same day as the Super Bowl, and will feature numerous local chefs and organizations creating chocolate dishes.

Sallie Culbreth, CCMC's community relations director, said there will be between 15 and 19 chocolatiers participating and each "will bring between 800 and 1,000 servings of chocolate."

Culbreth said the participants are creative so there will be a wide variety of chocolate dishes such as ice cream or chocolate-covered fruit. The dishes will compete for two different awards. Judges will determine the best chocolate, and there will also be a people's choice award.

Entertainment will be provided by juggler and balloon artist Justin Tine (Justin Chastant) and by the Fun City Chorus.

The festival has been a success in the past, Culbreth said, noting they had almost 1,000 people attend last year and raised $50,000. The festival has become so successful it has become congested, she said.

To try to cut down on how many people will be at the festival at one time, there will be two general admission times, 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., she said, noting the idea was a result of the group thinking "of ways to make it a great experience."

Culbreth said CCMC's mission is to cause poverty reduction and the money raised will be used for that purpose.

"We accomplish this through our Getting Ahead program that teaches people how to move from poverty to a more stable and sustainable future," she said. "We offer charitable medical, dental, pharmacy and vision health care: and we have case managers that advocate for people who need access to vital resources or services. The Chocolate Festival supports the work we do in this community."

All of the participants in the contest are volunteers and nearly 100 additional volunteers will help with the festival, she said.

General admission is $20 and VIP admission is $50. Tickets can be purchased online at https://ccmchs.org, or at Embassy Suites, 400 Convention Blvd., or at CCMC, 133 Arbor St., between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays.

The deadline to purchase tickets is Jan. 27. No tickets will be sold the day of the event.
