SANDPOINT — There was no shortage of news in 2019.

Below are the highlights of the events which took place in the county during 2019, from a change in leadership at the Festival at Sandpoint to a lawsuit by Sheriff Daryl Wheeler over the city’s policy of allowing the Festival to prohibit firearms at the summer concert series.

Top stories in 2019 include:

August

Coca-Cola donates electronic scoreboards through its partnership with SHS. The Three Amigos helped to install the scoreboards on the softball field and Pine Street athletic field.

The city replaces 155 trash containers in its downtown core and parks with 56 new Bigbelly “smart” waste collection bins. Each bin is equipped with WiFi and a solar power transmitter that signals Waste Management and city staff that it needs to be emptied.

The Festival at Sandpoint Board of Directors announces that they are seeking a new executive director after former director of 21 years, Dyno Wahl, received her fifth arrest for driving under the influence.

September

The second phase of the city’s downtown revitalization project is pushed back to Sept. 3 to minimize impacts on local businesses, causing portions of First Avenue and Cedar Street to be closed. The second phase of the project includes wider sidewalks and bulbouts, seat walls and planters, stormwater improvements, new trees, bike racks, beaches, and lighting.

Former Sandpoint High School wrestler Jake Rosholt is elected to the 2019 Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame.

Bonner County and Sheriff Daryl Wheeler are suing the city over its policy of allowing the Festival to prohibit firearms. This lawsuit was sparked by an instance during the summer where Scott Herendon and Jeff Avery were told to secure their firearms in their vehicles or receive refunds for their tickets.

October

The SHS girls varsity soccer team claims first state title since 2014 with a victory over Kuna. Sandpoint has now won eight 4A state titles, tying Bishop Kelly for the most since 2000 when the Idaho High School Activities Association started sanctioning the state tournaments.

Mayor Shelby Rognstad breaks a split decision by City Council members on approving the final concept design for War Memorial Field, which includes installing artificial turf.

Three full-time workers and one part-time worker at the Festival at Sandpoint abruptly resign.

Charles Manning, CEO of Kochava, is nominated for Effective Mobile Marketing Series’ “Disruptor of the Decade” Award along with AirBnB, Spotify, and Uber.

November

In Nov. 5 elections, incumbents win out in city elections, voters approve permanent LPOSD levy, and Rognstad wins mayoral race.

Kelly Prior promoted to Litehouse, Inc. president and CEO. Prior was appointed executive vice president in 2010 and previously took on the role of interim president in 2018.

Southside Elementary becomes fifth school in Idaho to earn STEAM certification.

December

An outdoor recreation center opens in newly acquired Pine Street Woods property, the combined efforts of the Kaniksu Land Trust and Sandpoint Nordic Club. The center will be funded through a Blue Cross of Idaho Foundation for Health “Community Transformation Grant” that was awarded to the city of Sandpoint.

Volunteers help to restore Clay and Reno Hutchinson’s Carousel of Smiles. More than 200 people have signed up to help restore and paint the 36 ponies. Triangle Drive businesses, Full Circle Powder Coating, Selkirk Power Generation, and Northwest Autobody provide services to repair the center pole.

City council members unanimously selected a natural rubber and cork mix for the artificial turf that will be installed at War Memorial Field. This cost of the turf is $2.39 per square foot, for an estimated total cost of $349,580.
