Happy New Year! If you’re a fan of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, you probably know that the iconic event drops its lineup in January.
But as folks bat around rumors and predictions and some battle general anxiety in social media groups awaiting its release, let’s look at the data of when promoter Goldenvoice has released the lineup over the festival’s history.
For the uninitiated, Coachella started as a two-day festival at the Empire Polo Club in October 1999 with Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Beck and more. It was a far cry from the success that the festival is now and after the first year there was no Coachella in 2000. When the festival came back in 2001, it moved from the fall to the spring. In 2001, the lineup was released on March 2, which is the latest that Coachella has revealed its acts when the festival has been in the spring.
The lineup release moved progressively earlier in the following years, with the Coachella festival lineup dropping on Jan. 2 every year since 2017. This chart shows when the lineup has come out for each year since 2001, with the date converted to the number day it is in the year (like Jan. 2 = 2, Jan. 8 = 8, etc.).

Now, let’s look at the frequency of days of the week when the Coachella lineup comes out. Over the 19 years of data, Coachella is most likely to drop its lineup on a Tuesday. The lineup has been released on a Tuesday 8 times (42%). After that, Monday has been the most popular day for the lineup to drop, which has happened 5 times (26%). These both make sense when you consider tickets typically go on sale on a Friday. The lineup has never been released on a weekend.
