Savannah St. Patrick’s Day festival, parade will be separate in 2020 - Atlanta Journal Constitution

While most people are planning for New Year’s Day activities, Savannah’s announced a change for its biggest annual holiday celebration. 

In 2020 the city’s St. Patrick’s Day festival will start at 6 p.m. Friday, March 13 and last until 6 p.m. Sunday, March 15, according to the Savannah Morning News. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will start March 17 at 10 a.m. 

The festival and parade will now be held on different days, which will give law enforcement officials a chance to regroup between activities, Savannah Police Maj. Robert Gavin told the Savannah Morning News. 

“Having the festival separated gives us the ability to break down the festival and allow the traffic on River Street and the rest of the city to continue to go back to normal,” Gavin said.

In 2019, Savannah’s Wright Square was left covered in trash following St. Patrick’s Day after revelers dropped cups, wrappers and garbage during the activities. Photos of the square posted on Facebook sparked outrage online, AJC.com previously reported.

The city of Savannah plans to have more conferences closer to the festival and parade dates, but wanted to advise the public early about the events being separated, the Savannah Morning News reported.

The city of Atlanta also announced the date of its St. Partick’s Day Parade. It will start at noon on March 14, according to the event’s website.
