Mobile Jewish Film Festival opens 10-film run Thursday - AL.com

The 2020 Mobile Jewish Film Festival opens Thursday with a special presentation of a film paired with a new Mobile Museum of Art exhibition.

Overall, the festival presents 10 public screenings between Jan. 16 and Feb. 2. The opener is “BESA: The Promise,” a film about Muslims in Albania who saved Jewish refugees from the Holocaust. The film concerns efforts by American photographer Norman H. Gershman to document that heroic effort; the screening at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, will serve as the opening for the exhibition “BESA: A Code of Honor,” showcasing related photos and materials.

Admission is free, but registration is required via a link at www.mobilejewishfederation.org. Advance ticket sales, locations and other information can be found at the site for the remainder of the lineup:

  • “Fiddler, Miracles of Miracles,” about the creation and importance of “Fiddler on the Roof,” 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at Springhill Avenue Temple. Screening preceded by dinner and live music. Reservations required, $27/$25.
  • “Marshall,” about Thurgood Marshall’s joint effort with Sam Friedman to overcome racism and antisemitism in their defense of a client, 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, University of South Alabama Laidlaw Performing Arts Center. $9/$7.
  • “Prosecuting Evil, The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz,” a documentary about the last surviving Nuremburg prosecutor, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, USA Laidlaw Performing Arts Center. $9/$7.
  • “Shoelaces,” about a son’s fight to donate a kidney to the father who abandoned him, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, USA Laidlaw Performing Arts Center. Followed by a dessert reception. $9/$7.
  • “The Spy Behind Home Plate,” about OSS agent and professional baseball player Morris Moe Berg. 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, Springhill Avenue Temple. $9/$7. Followed by dessert reception.
  • “The Light of Hope,” 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, USA Baldwin County Performance Center in Fairhope. $9/$7. Followed by reception.
  • “Promise at Dawn,” about WWII pilot and novelist Romaine Gary, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, Bernheim Hall in the Ben May Main Library. $9/$7.

  • “To Dust,” a comedy-drama about a Hasidic cantor (Geza Rohrig) trying to come to peace with his wife’s death and burial with the help of a bewildered science teacher (Matthew Broderick). 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, Ahavas Chesed Synagogue. $9/$7. Reception follows.
  • “Golda’s Balcony, The Film,” presents the one-woman play about Golda Meir by William Gibson, featuring footage from the original 2003 run starring Tovah Feldshuh, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, Ahavas Chesed Synagogue. $9/$7. Dessert reception follows.
