JANUARY
Palm Springs International Film Festival
The film festival, one of the largest in North America, welcomes 135,000 visitors each year with its lineup of 200 films from more than 60 countries. This year, screenings will take place through Jan. 13.

Anime Los Angeles
This fan-run convention is all about anime and manga. There will be cosplay, dance battles and a fashion show among other activities.

Monterey Park Lunar New Year Festival
What: Two-day festival with live entertainment, folk arts, and more than 50 food booths.

Asian American Expo
What: Event at the Fairplex in Pomona promises two days of food, shopping and fun.

This new festival celebrating the return of the Land Rover Defender will happen at a venue called the Empire Grand Oasis in Thermal. Headliners include Anderson .Paak, Q-Tip & Mark Ronson and Young The Giant. There will also be a variety of outdoor activities as well as 15 miles of course to ride Land Rover vehicles on.

UVSA Tet Festival
What: Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration put on by the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations. Attractions include a talent show, pho and egg-eating contests, and a replica of a traditional village.

Riverside Lunar New Year 2020
What: Inaugural event in Riverside, which did not have a festival last year after an organizer moved out of the area. This year’s festival is put on by Panana Events, which is also putting together the South Bay Lunar Festival in Torrance. Festivities will include lion dancers and kung fu.

Festival of Human Abilities
This festival celebrates the creative talents of people with disabilities. There’s live music, wheelchair dancing, sign language choirs, demonstrations and more.

Superfine! Artfair – Los Angeles
More than 60 artists, galleries and collectives will display and sell their work over this three day festival when it returns to Los Angeles. The festival aims to connect smaller, emerging artists and galleries with consumers.

One Love Cali Reggae Fest
The Reggae music festival returns to the Queen Mary Events Park in Long Beach for three days with a lineup that includes artists such as The Dirty Heads, Rebelution, Sublime with Rome and Slightly Stoopid.

Modernism Week
This series of Palm Springs events is all about midcentury modern architecture and design and happens yearly. Some of the more than 300 events included as part of the week are architectural bus tours, a vintage trailer exhibition, films, lectures and more.

Riverside County Fair & National Date Festival
The annual festival features carnival rides, traditional and date-inspired food items and musical entertainment included with the price of admission. Though other headliners for the festival have not yet been announced, country music singer and songwriter Chris Janson is scheduled to perform Feb. 22.

ScotsFestival & International Highland Games XXVII
The event, which celebrates Scottish culture and history, features Scottish entertainment; Scottish cuisine; and competitions in the categories of massed bands, piping, drumming, darts, Highland dancing and Highland athletics.

African-American Festival
The annual festival, now in its 18th year, celebrates African and African-American history and culture. Previous iterations of the event have included performances by hip hop and break dancers, jazz musicians and Mardi Gras second line dancers.

Auto Club 400
Nascar will return to the Inland Empire for the Auto Club 400. Kyle Busch won last year’s Auto Club 400, marking his 200th national series win after winning the 2019 Auto Club 400.

Pechanga Wine Festival & Chocolate Decadence
Guests can pair chocolates and pastries with wine, champagne and spirits from 7-10 p.m. during Chocolate Decadence, the first of the two days. Wine will take center stage from 1-5 p.m. during Pechanga Wine Festival, the second of the two days, and there will be top wines from California and the rest of the world available to sample.

CRSSD
This music festival taking place at San Diego’s Waterfront Park will feature a variety of well-known DJs and electronic music producers, including Gesaffelstein, Rufus Du Sol, Chris Lake and Nora En Pure.

Holi Festival of Colors
Annual festival, which takes place at multiple locations in the spring, features music, dance, yoga, food and the throwing of powdered paints. The paints are made from a corn starch base.

Festival of Whales
This will be the 49th year for the festival, which celebrates the migration of the California gray whale from Alaska to Mexico. During peak season, 40-50 whales pass by Dana Point each day. Previous editions of the festival have included whale watching (from boats and land), art displays, classic cars, sand sculpting and more.

Festival of the Kite
If you love to see kites fly high up in the air, this might be the festival for you. The annual Festival of the Kite will have kite flyers competing in a variety of categories, including best hand-made kite, best ground display and highest flying kite. There will also be a Craig’s Hot Dog on a Stick eating contest and dance and martial arts demonstrations.

Beyond Wonderland

Latin Food Fest
This celebration of Latin cuisine and spirits will return for its eighth year. In addition to a list of vendors that includes El Pollo Peruano, Northgate Market and Lola’s Mexican Cuisine, there will be chefs conducting cooking demonstrations and tastings.

APRIL
Renaissance Pleasure Faire
Travel back to 16th century England with this fair that features costumed characters, dancers, jousters, marionettes and daredevils playing with swords and fire. The event also has its own pub crawl, where participants are able to get six different drinks from six different locations on the fair grounds.

WonderCon
The Anaheim Convention Center becomes a haven for fans of comics, anime, movies and TV for this two-day event. The convention gives its guests the chance to see exclusive TV and film programming and panels as well as a chance to shop merchandise from hundreds of merchants, artists and publishers.

Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival
It can’t officially be festival season without the towering art installations, stacked lineup and brightly dressed festival visitors of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. This year’s headliners include Rage Against The Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Oceans. Other big names on the lineup are Calvin Harris, Lana Del Rey and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke.

California Wine Festival
Sample hundreds of red and white wines and taste food items whipped up by specialty chefs and food vendors. There will also be artisan vendors selling their wares. There will be a rare and reserve tasting from 6:30-9 p.m. Friday and a beachside wine festival 1-4 p.m. Saturday. The event kicks off in Dana Point, but there are other iterations of the event at other beachside locations later in the year.

Stagecoach Country Music Festival
Put your cowboy hat on and grab a Budweiser for the desert’s biggest country music party that always follows on the heels of Coachella. This year’s top billed performers include festival veterans Carrie Underwood and Eric Church and first time headliner Thomas Rhett. There are also some surprising additions, such as Bryan Adams and ZZ Top.

2020 Show and Go
This Riverside event features a car cruise down Market Street starting at 6 p.m. Friday followed by more festivities on Saturday including a pancake breakfast, a parade and another car cruise. The event culminates in a trophy presentation and raffle at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Temecula Rod Run
See classic cars cruise down Old Town Front Street on Friday night for the Rod Run’s “Friday Night Cruise” and get a close up look at them during the day Saturday as part of this annual Temecula tradition. BeachLife Festival

Joshua Tree Music Festival
This small-scale festival, which likes to tout itself as the anti-Coachella, will feature an eclectic mix of lesser-known artists in its lineup, including experimental blues group Dirtwire, horn and percussion trio Moon Hooch and dance group My Baby.

Downtown Burbank Arts Festival

Balboa Island Artwalk

Lavender Festival
The festival will return for its 15th year and will give guests opportunities to stroll through 20 acres of lavender fields, take guided tours in horse-drawn carriages and eat lavender food items at a San Gorgonio Pass farm, ranch and inn.

Garden Grove Strawberry Festival
Memorial Day weekend means strawberry season in Garden Grove. That’s when the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival will arrive with rides, live entertainment, contests, strawberry-themed foods and more. The event kicks off Friday night with the the cutting of a giant strawberry cake. On Saturday there will be a parade with floats, bands, and equestrians. The carnival rides, booths, and entertainment at the amphitheater will span all four days.

Fiesta Hermosa
This large arts and craft fair will feature the work of more than 300 artists, including photographers, painters, ceramicists and sculptors. There are also plenty of different cuisines to nosh on, including Thai, Greek and Mexican. Tribute bands will perform music from two different stages.

Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival
Sample wines from throughout the Temecula Valley, go on a hot air balloon ride or simply plop down a blanket or an armchair and enjoy live musical entertainment when this festival returns for its 37th year. At nighttime the festival holds its annual “balloon glow,” where a cluster of hot air balloons are lit up against the night sky from ground level.

Beaumont Cherry Festival
Beaumont’s biggest community event, now in its 102nd year, will have have music, entertainment, games, rides and booths with food and drink.

San Diego County Fair
This fair typically has carnival rides, games, live entertainment and an eclectic mix of food booths vending everything from Mexican food to novelty food creations. This year’s novelty food items have not been announced.

Virgin Fest
Businessman Richard Branson has owned everything from record labels to airlines and the new Virgin Fest will be in Los Angeles. The festival aims to appeal to fans of all kinds of music and will have three stages. It will have a capacity for 30,000 people. The festival has not yet released its lineup.

Temecula Art & Street Painting Festival
Artists will show off their wares, including ceramics, jewelry, paintings and photographs. The star attraction is the detailed chalk murals — some as big as 12 feet by 12 feet — that artists will work on just outside the Temecula Civic Center.

Playboy Jazz Festival
The festival, which celebrates both legends and rising stars in jazz, is now in its 42nd year. This year’s lineup of artists has not yet been announced.

Hollywood Fringe Festival
Local, national and international arts companies and performers do productions at venues across Hollywood and Los Angeles. The productions don’t just happen at theaters but also unexpected places, such as parks, churches and restaurants.

Mariachi U.S.A. Festival
The 31st annual event has top mariachi bands from both the United States and Mexico on its lineup as well as folkoric dancers. The evening culminates in a brilliant display of fireworks.

Sawdust Art Festival’s 54th Annual Summer Show
More than 200 Laguna Beach artists will display and selling their wares, including paintings, jewelry, surf art and ceramics. There will also be food, including popcorn, espresso, tacos and Mediterranean cuisine.

Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival
Concerts are performed throughout the summer and the acts the Redlands Bowl brings in are very eclectic — they range from bands, to orchestral performances, to musicals. This year a live musical version of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” will be performed as part of the festival with a dress rehearsal performance on July 21 and actual performances July 23-26. The schedule is typically announced in February.

JULY
Anime Expo 2020
This Los Angeles celebration of all things anime includes cosplay competitions, fan and industry panels and numerous vendors selling everything from Japanese fashion and accessories, to games and music.

Pageant of the Masters
This Orange County tradition celebrates art through tableaux vivants, or “living pictures.” People dress up and pose to match works of art. This year’s theme for the show is “Made in America” and is dedicated to “revolutionaries, innovators, dreamers” who made America their home, according to a description on the pageant’s website.

Orange County Fair

God’s House of Hip Hop 20/20 Summer Fest
75 artists and 7 DJs will perform during this Christian hip hop festival. The festival’s official lineup will be released in late January.

Comic-Con International
Huge movie and TV studios, comic book publishers and video game companies come out to play at this annual event that features panels, exhibits and tons of chances to scoop up the latest pop culture merchandise. Studios usually use the convention as a chance to drop big news about their film and TV properties. The cosplay is out of this world.

International Surf Festival

Vans U.S. Open of Surfing

Route 66 Cruisin’ Reunion

Mission Inn Hotel and Spa Festival of Lights
The holiday season begins in Riverside with this annual event that sees the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa decorated with millions of lights and animatronic figures and lots of events and entertainment put on by the city. There are always vendors and rides in the downtown area surrounding the hotel. The festival kicks off with a “switch-on” ceremony on the day after Thanksgiving that usually includes fireworks and live entertainment.

FESTIVALS LIKELY TO RETURN IN 2020
Doheny Blues Festival
This Dana Point tradition, which typically happens in May, has been going strong for more than 20 years and features an eclectic mix of blues musicians. Last year’s lineup included Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, Jonny Lang and the Taj Mahal Quartet.
San Bernardino County Fair
Head to the High Desert, more specifically Victorville, for this fair that typically runs from late May through early June. There will be carnival rides as well as fair foods, including turkey legs, corn dogs, cheese curds, candy apples and more.
Splash House
This festival turns iconic Palm Springs locations into the backdrop for some gigantic electronic dance music pool parties for two weekends over the summer. There’s usually one weekend in June and one weekend in August, each with its own list of EDM headliners. Some of the locations that have been used for the festival in the past include The Renaissance, The Riviera and The Saguaro.
Hard Summer
The festival, known for its blend of electronic and hip-hop acts, had its has been at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana in August in recent years. Though the festival hasn’t announced its dates and acts yet for 2020, a note on its website says, “See you next year!”
Viva! Pomona
This eclectic summer music festival in Pomona usually boasts a lineup of English- and Spanish-language indie rock bands and has been happening for the past eight years. The festival is organized yearly by Rene Contreras, who is one of the people behind the Chella Celebrando La Communidad concerts. A 2020 lineup or dates for Viva! Pomona have not yet been announced.
Camp Flog Gnaw
Camp Flog Gnaw, the eclectic music festival curated by hip-hop artist Tyler, The Creator, has been going strong for eight years so it’s likely it will be back. Artists on last year’s lineup included Solange, YG, Brockhampton and Drake.
Blizzcon
The video game community unites for this convention full of cosplay, competition, autograph opportunities and the chance to learn all about new games and expansions. The fall convention is put on by billion dollar video game company Blizzard.
ComplexCon
Fashion lovers unite! This festival, which last happened in early November, turns the Long Beach Convention Center into a shopper’s paradise with items from name brands, boutique sellers and new retailers available for purchase. The event also includes music and last year’s performers included Kid Cudi, Lil’ Kim, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals and more.
Adult Swim Festival
The festival, which draws its name from the popular Cartoon Network block of programming, features music, comedy and screenings of popular animation. The show returned for its second year in November, but in a new home at the Banc of California Stadium. The website for the festival hasn’t listed future dates as yet.
Tropicalia Music and Taco Festival
This festival, which offers both top music makers and a selection of tacos, has happened each November for the last three years. Last year the festival moved to Fairplex Pomona.
Rolling Loud Los Angeles
The Rolling Loud hip-hop festival happens in locations all over the country annually and for the past two years has arrived to the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles around mid-December.
