Something about this Rocky Mountain air must inspire songs, as northern Colorado is home to many talented musical artists. Whatever the reason for the population density, it can often be difficult to get all of these bands together under one roof when chaotic summer touring seasons don’t always allow for easy planning. But Longmont’s Winter Walkabout Music Showcase helps fill that void, gathering artists in the off season to perform in various venues across downtown Longmont.
“I’d seen similar events around the state, and my now co-organizer of the festival had a similar idea,” organizer Colin Argys said. “Longmont is notoriously supportive of live music, so we thought that might work well in downtown Longmont. We chose February because it’s generally a slow time of year for everyone.
“We figured people are probably looking for something to do, maybe getting a little bit of cabin fever, so we figured that would be a good time to do this multi-venue indoor music festival.”
More than 50 performers will be on stage at the 17 venues throughout the day, each stage curated by different genres of music so audience members can sit and enjoy their favorite music without having to wander. Nevertheless, for those interested in exploring, the festival is designed so that each venue is within walking distance of the next. For those with mobility issues, a free shuttle will travel in a loop throughout the day.
This is the festival’s second year, having been well received by the Longmont community last year. Organizers Argys and Jessica Carson said they were excited to hear positive feedback from many who attended last year, and are looking forward to its continued development.
“It was amazing,” Carson said. “We didn’t know what to expect, but we sold out the event by four o’clock. And there were a lot of people that didn’t buy tickets that were just kind of walking around trying to check in and see if they could get into certain places. I’m expecting (this year’s festival) to be probably even better.”
The idea for the festival came from a shared love of music between two coworkers with a crazy idea for a unique music festival. Planning for the first show came together in a little less than two months, organizers said, so this year they anticipate bigger crowds and far fewer kinks, Carson said.
“There was a little bit of surprise that we have so many people that go see live music in Longmont,” Carson said, “but really, I’m not surprised because I’ve seen the local scene for about 10 years now, and I knew there was that kind of support. I just felt like there needed to be an event where we could show that. We saw some really great numbers and foot traffic at the participating venues last year. So I think they’re all feeling excited, and anticipating doing it again and having a big boom in February.”
Going forward, the Argys and Carson said they plan to slowly build their audience and continue to develop the showcase, working with new venues and putting the word out farther into the community. For Argys, he said he’s in no rush for the event to become the next Coachella, instead, he and his partner are developing quality at a manageable pace.
“I’m just excited to see it grow, improve on last year’s success and help as many people as possible have a great time downtown,” Argys said. “The energy around town was was really awesome last year, people were excited and walking around all over the place. So I’m just excited to see that happen again and continue to grow it slowly.”
The showcase culminates with a performance by headliners The Burroughs, a self-proclaimed “sweaty soul” band that will take the stage at the ballroom in the Elk’s Lodge, 306 Coffman St., Longmont, to finish the evening. After this performance, VIP ticket holders are invited to stay and join the musicians and organizers for an after party in the ballroom. The event will include food, socialization, a jam session and more, offering the perfect end to a fun festival day.
“The after party last year felt really special and really magical, having so many different musicians from so many different bands coming together and having food, drinks and playing together,” Carson said.
