This week in Ithaca: 'Nutcracker,' Winter Lights Festival and more holiday traditions - Ithaca Journal

One of Ithaca’s most beloved holiday traditions returns, as the Ithaca Ballet brings “The Nutcracker” to the State Theatre.

Other seasonal events abound around town, including the Winter Light Festival and Little Red Wagon Artisan Market. Find out more in our roundup of 10 great events happening in the Ithaca area this week:

1. Ithaca Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’ returns to State Theatre

The Ithaca Ballet continues its annual holiday tradition when it once again brings “The Nutcracker” to the State Theatre this weekend. More than 70 dancers are featured in the production, which is choreographed by Lavinia Reed and directed by Cindy Reed. Children of all ages will delight in Clara's victory over the mice and her voyage to the Land of Sweets filled with magical toys, dancing snowflakes and belly dancers, all topped off with visions of sugarplums dancing on the stage. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s show will feature the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra conducted by S. Shade Zajac playing the famous Tchaikovsky score live. Tickets are $10 to $22. (ithacaballet.org, stateofithaca.org)

2. Winter Light Festival continues on the Commons

The Downtown Ithaca Winter Light Festival continues on the Commons this weekend with more events. From 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, the Lightsaber Invitational will feature the Ithaca Sabers offering LED lightsaber combat training demonstrations that will culminate with an invitational tournament featuring the best martial artists in the region. From 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, “Let's Glow Ithaca” encourages people to wear their brightest and most colorful outfits for a party featuring a community light parade led by Sparky the Unicorn through the Commons. And the Prismatica light prisms will be on display through Sunday evening. (downtownithaca.com)

3. Actor’s Workshop of Ithaca’s to host Fall Showcase

Laugh, think and maybe cry a bit at the Actor’s Workshop of Ithaca’s annual Fall Showcase, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday, and 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday at Cornell’s Risley Theatre. Ithaca’s oldest private theater-training studio will offer a night of fun, riveting, thought-provoking, high-speed, one-act plays ranging from romantic comedy and farce to drama and political commentary — each of the shows features different actors and different material. Suggested donation at the door is $15 to $20; arrive early, as the theater tends to fill up quickly. (actorsworkshop.biz)

4. Cornell Cinema presents Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood’

Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood," will screen at Cornell Cinema at 7 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around a rapidly changing Hollywood in the year 1969. The film was recently awarded 2019’s Best Screenplay by the New York Film Critics Circle, as well as the Palm Dog award at the Cannes Film Festival. (cinema.cornell.edu)

5. Little Red Wagon Artisan Market moves to new location

Now in its sixth year, the Little Red Wagon Artisan Market will take place in a new location at Artist Alley at South Hill Business Campus, across from the entrance to Ithaca College on Route 96B, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The event will feature more than 70 curated local fine artists and artisans who will showcase a variety of beautiful handmade products from pottery to clothing, jewelry, art, wood and housewares to local cider and beer, coffee, pastries and much more. The Wagon will be held in conjunction with the Clay School of Ithaca’s annual student pottery sale, and many Artist Alley studios will be open to explore. (littleredwagonartisans.com)

6. Rhys Wolfe celebrates the release of his debut novel ‘Cecil’s Flighty Fancy’

At 1 p.m. Saturday, join author Rhys Wolfe at the Watershed for the book launch celebration of “Cecil’s Flighty Fancy,” a comedic novel that follows the adventures of affectatious freelance writer Cecil Haverford and his friends as they struggle to adult in San Diego. Wolfe is a comedic author who grew up in Hilo, Hawaii, spent his 20’s in California, and now lives in Ithaca. (amazon.com/author/rhyswolfe)

7. Ithaca Community Orchestra to give fall concert

The Ithaca Community Orchestra, under the direction of Madeline Schatz-Harris, will present a concert titled “Classical Meets Jazz” at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Lansing Middle School Auditorium. This concert will feature piano soloist Andrea Merrill, who will perform Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The orchestra also will present the East Coast premiere of Henry Wolking’s “Powell Canyons,” which will feature the Paul Merrill Quartet, and it will perform selections from “West Side Story,” led by assistant conductor Aaron Burgess. The public is invited to attend a reception held directly after the concert. A suggested donation of $7 will be accepted at the door; children are admitted free of charge. 8. Temple Beth El to host Hanukkah Festival 

Temple Beth El, at 402 N. Cayuga St., will once again open its doors to the Ithaca community in celebration of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, which begins this year on the evening of Dec. 22. The temple’s festival will take place this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will feature a lively indoor market with a wide range of handmade gifts, craft activities and an “escape room” offered by the temple youth community for a wide range of ages. At noon, local playwright Rachel Lampert and friends will offer a special Hanukkah presentation in the temple sanctuary. Free to the public.  (tbeithaca.org) 

9. Buffalo Street Books to welcome Tanya Zabinski

At 1 p.m. Sunday, artist and author Tanya Zabinski, owner of Planet Love Designs, will be at Buffalo Street Books signing copies of her new book and inviting readers to roll up their sleeves, get inspired, and take action to build a sustainable, just and loving world. "Peace, Love, Action!" is an illustrated, illuminated A-to-Z of everyday actions that directly make a peaceful, fun and vibrant world, with original artworks bringing each action to life. 10. Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers to present concert at Ithaca College

The Dorothy Cotton Jubilee Singers will present a concert of Negro Spirituals at 3 p.m. Sunday in Ithaca College’s Ford Hall. The group is dedicated to preserving the Negro Spiritual and its themes of sorrow, despair and hope to promote racial healing and social justice; and to furthering civil-rights leader (and longtime Ithaca resident) Dorothy Cotton’s message of freedom and hope through music. The concert will include the debut of the Dorothy Cotton Youth Singers and is free to all, with donations accepted. (dorothycottonjubileesingers.org)
